Speed Racer (Mach Go Go Go)
Music Files: Round 1 and 2
The original music scores for Speed Racer (Mach Go Go Go) were digitally remastered and made available to collectors and fans on music CD. Round 1 was issued on June 21, 2002. The original Japanese theme song is included, along with an alternate take. It contains 65 tracks that were composed and recorded by Nobuyoshi Koshibe and his orchestra ensemble. Round 1 contains the music scores for episodes 1 through 15.
The second CD release for Speed Racer (Mach Go Go Go) was issued on September 25, 2002. It covers the rest of the original music scores for the series. Included is the original Japanese main title, but without the sound effects. The end title music is an instrumental that is also included. The U.S. Speed Racer theme song that was recorded by Danny Davis and the Nashville Brass is included. One track features the assorted monkey sounds for Chim-Chim, too. The CD contains 65 tracks that were composed and recorded by Nobuyoshi Koshibe and his orchestra ensemle. Round 2 contains the music scores from episodes 16 through 52.
The original music tapes from Tatsunoko in Tokyo, were digitally remastered and put on a CD master, with the replications made for the serious collectors and fans of the series to purchase. This music compilation marked the 40th anniversary of Tatsunoko Productions in 2002. VAP label in Japan exclusively makes Round 1 and 2 on CD for those interested. The CDs can be purchased exclusively online. Retailers include Amazon and Yesasia.com. The liner notes and track listings are in Japanese. The track listing I have below is converted to identify the music heard in the U.S. episode titles.
The music scores heard in Round 1 and 2 doesn't account for all the music heard in the series. They're a compilation of some of the best music themes and holds 65 tracks per CD. The liner notes contain every cue title, number and length that was recorded for every show. Round 1's liner notes list a total of 221 cues recorded. It begins with the recording session on August 4, 1966
The recording dates are listed for each episode, which began on August 24, 1966. The dates concluded on March 6, 1967. Listed is every theme cue for episodes 1 to 15. The liner notes for Round 2 contain a total of 329 cues recorded. Listed is every theme cue for episodes 16 through 52. The recording dates were from March 20, 1967 and concluded on December 19th. That's a total of 550 cues recorded that would require 10 music CDs to fit on.
For an individual to locate music themes that can't be found on the CDs, would require the liner notes and they could be tracked in a given episode. Since the liner notes list the cue times, one could match a particular cue and identify its use in Mach Go Go Go and Speed Racer. In the case of the U.S. version, a few cues may have been excised from every episode, when Zavala-Riss was contracted to edit the filmed storyline for time and content in 1967.
Speed Racer made use of tracked music in every episode. The composer would write and record the music for numerous scenes in the episodes made. But for some scenes, selected music cues were reused down the stretch. In many episodes, the tracked cues were edited in just a few scenes and heard along with the new music themes. In the later episodes, tracking of cues was used more often. In some shows, every theme cue was tracked over to make a complete music score. The reasons for this was because of budget restrictions and time constraints when Tatsunoko Studios was making the series in 1966 and 1967.
