Speed Racer

1.) The Great Plan, (Part 1)
Original Air Date: September 23, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: Take Flight! Mach, (Beginning)

The very first episode of Speed Racer starts with Speed telling us about the Mach Five and that Pops, an automotive genius, built it. We also see that there are 2101 km on the odometer as Speed goes between 160 and 180 kph. Speed is in a race weaving through the traffic on the circuit. After winning, Speed is asked to join the team sponsored by Pops' employer but says he can't since Pops doesn't want him to become a professional driver.

At a company board meeting, Pops is presenting plans he worked on for a year for the improved Mach Five. As he, dressed like a true engineer in work pants and casual shirt, presents his plans to the suit and tie crowd in the board room, Mr. Van Ruffle says Pops' plans are impossible and that he doesn't even want to hear them. Because a unanimous decision is required, the president says he can't allow Pops to proceed with his work. In a typical moment of anger, Pops quits and vows to rebuild the Mach Five himself.

As Speed and Pops are driving home in the Mach Five, four motorcyclists are awaiting them. As they chase the Mach Five, they get close enough to steal Pop's briefcase with the plans for the new Mach Five. Speed leaps from the Mach Five to one motorcycle, then to another and then still another as the drivers toss the briefcase between them while driving. Speed jumps off one just before it crashes. By then, Pops has followed the others into a mountain tunnel. He says something to the effect of being a former champion of the West Side Grunters and Groaners and that there's going to be a lot of groaning going on now.

Outside of the tunnel, Speed sees Trixie in her helicopter. He radios her and explains the problem, and she flies off to track down the biker with the plans. Cute little Trixie isn't a girl to mess with though. She gets a good laugh out of running the biker off the road. Back in the tunnel, Pops is doing well fighting the other 3 guys until one knocks him out with a wrench. Just then Speed arrives. It turns out he is an expert martial artist and has no trouble taking care of the 3 bad guys. Pops and Speed can then go pick up the plans from where Trixie ran the guy off the road.

At their very nice home, Mom doesn't seem the least bit concerned that Pops quit his job. As a matter of fact, she decides it's a good opportunity for Pops to remodel the kitchen, plant some shrubs, and so on. Pops is more concerned with how to get money to work on the new Mach Five. Elsewhere, Mr. Van Ruffle is bawling out his four motorcyclists for being so incompetent; they are all wearing bandages and slings. Just then, a mercenery named Ace Deucey walks in the room. He tells Van Ruffle, "I figured those guys would botch the job and they did. Give me $5,000 clams and I'll get the plans." The two make a deal.

Speed, however, has been worrying about how Pops will get the money to work on his new Mach Five. He decides to give up his goal of being a pro racer and will sell the Mach Five and give the money to Pops. After telling Sparky this, Sparky suggests instead that Speed should enter the Sword Mountain Race which has a winner's prize of $5,000. After convincing Speed, Sparky sets to work modifying the Mach Five with high traction tires so that it can race in mountainous terrain.

Back at the Racers' garage, Ace Deucey uses a gun to threaten Pops to give up the plans. When Speed comes home, that scares away Ace Deucey for some reason. Pops realizes he better do something clever to keep the plans hidden. He takes the Mach Five's windshield and etches the plans onto it using invisible ink. After Sparky finishes modifying the Mach Five, Speed takes it to the track for a road test. During it, Duggery, in his red car numbered 2, purposely hits Speed's car putting it into a spin and causing Speed to crash and lose consciousness. Apparently he just did it out of maliciousness.

Later, Sparky can't find the Mach Five's windshield. Spritle, proud of himself for doing a good deed, unwittingly gives Sparky the windshield with the secret plans on it. Being a good boy, Spritle calls Pops and tells him; Pops is not happy. As Pops talks to himself worrying about the possibility of the windshield being damaged or stolen, it turns out that Ace Deucey has been standing behind Pops listening. He knocks out Pops and leaves. When Pops regains consciousness he calls the track to have the race cancelled but is too late. As he is explaining what happened, the flag to begin the race drops.

Speed and Duggery are the first to hop in their cars and pull onto the raceway. Duggery purposely causes many crashes, and soon Speed sees him coming up on him. Meanwhile, Ace Deucey in car 13 and five of his men in black cars all numbered zero, enter the circuit. To get other cars out of the way, their hubs have spikes which they use to flatten tires of the cars. Spritle and Chim Chim, who have stowed away in the Mach Five's trunk, peek out and realize they're in trouble with so many bad guys on the way. Even Duggery gets worried. As Deucey's guys catch up to Speed, they threaten that he won't finish the race unless he gives them the windshield. Deucey edges toward Speed and tries to flatten his tire with the spiked wheel. He accelerates around the switchbacks and uses the auto-jacks to escape. The Mach Five goes airborn over the guard rail and careens down a steep mountainside.

2.) The Great Plan, (Part 2)
Original Air Date: September 23, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: Take Flight! Mach, (Conclusion)

As part two begins, Speed explains the Mach Five's steering wheel functions. Elsewhere, Trixie flies overhead in a small airplane and warns Speed that the plans are etched in the windshield and written in invisible ink. Speed, though, has already figured this out since the bad guys are so intent on getting it. As the race progresses, Speed needs to pass Duggery, but just then Ace Deucey's gang shows up and blocks the road ahead. Duggery tells Speed about a path to the left where they can avoid Deucey. Speed uses the Mach Five's rotary saws to cut through the underbrush. Duggery follows with Deucey's gang in close pursuit. Trixie sees what's going on and drops what look like grenades. Deucey's gang stops and hits the dirt thinking grenades are about to explode. But resourceful Trixie has simply dropped harmless smoke bombs. This irritates Ace Deucey who grabs a rifle and shoots down Trixie's plane. Trixie parachutes safely but is then captured by Deucey and company.

Meanwhile, Duggery has unknowingly begun heading for a volcano. Speed realizes this and follows to warn him. As Speed gets to the mouth of the volcano, he sees Duggery's empty car and realizes he must have fallen in. A small quake topples Speed, and he falls in barely catching himself on the wall. He spots Duggery who is in an even more precarious spot than Speed. Speed helps Duggery and they each get out just in time, only to see that Ace Deucey and his boys are there with their hostage, Trixie.

From their favorite hiding place in the Mach Five's trunk, Spritle and Chim Chim see the difficult spot Speed and Trixie are in. They distract the bad guys by throwing and slingshotting rocks at them. Finally, they beat the bad guys, but Deucey gets away in the Mach Five. Speed takes one of the car #0s and pursues him. The car is slower than the Mach Five, but Deucey keeps hitting the wrong buttons in the Mach Five, like the auto jacks, which slows him down. Speed catches up and leaps in. He and Deucey fight. Eventually they stop the car and get out at a cliff edge. Speed throws his helmet at the windshield breaking it, so that no one can get the plans. When Deucey is distracted by that, Speed kicks his gun away. During the fight, Deucey falls off the cliff, but isn't killed.

Like a good racer, Speed continues racing. At the finish line, Pops is happy Speed is okay then is mad when he sees the smashed windshield. Speed crosses the finish line first, but Pops is still mad because Speed raced going against Pops' advice. And as it turns out, the race is cancelled because of the bad tactics used by Ace Deucey which was unfair to the racers.

3.) Challenge of the Masked Racer, (Part 1)
Original Air Date: September 30, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: The Riddle of the Masked Racer, (Beginning)

Speed and Trixie are driving in the Mach Five on a windy road along cliffs by the ocean. As a puppy runs out on the road the Mach Five is able to spring over it safely avoiding catastrophe. Further down the road, they stop at a port where a cargo ship is unloading a yellow racing car numbered 9, Racer X's car. Reporters are milling about gossiping about how there are always crashes in races that Racer X enters. They wonder if he is to blame. Behind them, Speed is holding hands with and talking to Trixie. He says no one knows who Racer X is or where he comes from. Speed mentions that Racer X won the Grand Prix at Le Mans four years in a row and that he has won most of the races he's entered. As Racer X gets in his car, a man, Mr. Wiley, runs up to the car. He says he wants to talk to Racer X and that he is on the Trans-Country Race committee. Racer X ignores him and drives off.

While Pops is sitting at a table in his garage, two men have come to visit. One of them is never named and the other is Mr. Fixer, a crony of none other than Mr. Wiley. The two men are trying to outbid each other to have Pops allow Speed to join their teams. Fixer has introduced himself as being in charge of the Alpha Team. When the bidding reaches $50,000, Pops yells at them to get out; that Speed won't be on either one of their teams. By a road along the ocean, Speed and Trixie are sitting on the hood of the Mach Five watching a pretty sunset. They talk about the Trans-Country Race, and Trixie asks Speed to enter as a favor to her. Just then, the red car #2 from the Alpha Team drives up and stops.

Zoomer Slick says Pops made a mistake not letting Speed join the Alpha Team and that Speed should have signed on with Mr. Fixer. Slick says he'll win and zooms off. At the Racer family's home that night, they are listening to the news. The Trans-Country Race is described as a grueling 300 miles and the most dangerous race. They show some of the entrants; the Alpha Team with Zoomer Slick, Mr. Fixer and Mr. Wiley. Next, Racer X is shown, and Pops says, "He may be known to bring bad luck to races, but he's one of the best drivers I've ever seen." Finally, the tv announcer says that a young racer named Speed Racer has entered. Pops blows his top, needless to say. Pops then relates to Speed, the story of why Speed's older brother Rex left home.

Laying in bed that night, Speed wonders why Rex never returned home. Speed wishes that he would. In his office the next day, Mr. Wiley the secret leader of the Alpha Team, is talking to Zoomer Slick. He tells Slick that the Alpha Team has to win. Slick says he'll do whatever it takes, whether it's by the rules or not, but he better be paid well. Spritle and Chim Chim are playing outside with toy models of the Mach Five and the Masked Racer's car, the Shooting Star No. 9. As the models both crash into the sand, the real Racer X walks up scaring Spritle. He gives Spritle some candy to deliver a letter to Speed. Before Spritle gets to the candy, though, Chim-Chim, as usual, eats it first.

It's rainy and windy that night. In bed (at 10 past midnight), Speed is thinking about what Pops said; that he needs more experience before he can enter a race. It appears that Speed, respecting his father's advice, at this point has withdrawn from the Trans-Country Race. He decides that if he needs experience, driving bad weather of a night like this will help. Speed gets up and goes to the track.

Speed arrives at the track and within a few moments, so does Racer X. He tells Speed not to enter. Instead of responding, Speed issues a challenge by hopping in the Mach Five and starting to race. Racer X follows. As they speed along the circuit, Speed has trouble keeping the Mach Five under control. With visibility down to zero, one wrong turn spells doom for either of them. Coming around a curve, Speed comes upon a road blocked by boulders and uses the powerful jacks to leap over them. As Speed continues along a seaside road, the ocean beats against the road nearly washing over it. It distracts Speed and he hits some sand barrels barely controlling the Mach Five. On a hilltop by the road, we see someone's hand. It's holding a knife and cuts a rope holding logs. The logs roll down the hill blocking the road. Speed hits them and falls, unconscious, out of the car.

4.) Challenge of the Masked Racer, (Part 2)
Original Air Date: September 30, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: The Riddle of the Masked Racer, (Conclusion)

Racer X brings Speed to his home after the accident. While Speed is still unconscious, Racer X is talking to him. He says he isn't responsible for the crashes and that some mysterious person is out to get him. He doesn't want the person to mistakenly get Speed, and that's why he doesn't want Speed to enter the race. He also says that when he becomes world champion he will reveal his identity to the world.

Speed wakes up confused since he doesn't know where he is. He looks around the house and sees a vase of white roses, Mom's favorite flower, and many trophies and race pictures. Then he sees Racer X's mask on the floor and hears the shower running. Speed thinks he can finally see who Racer X is. As he thinks about it, he puts the mask on. As luck would have it, thugs from Mr. Wiley's organization have broken in to kidnap Racer X. Instead, they unknowingly make off with Speed after knocking him unconscious with a gun.

As the thugs leave, Trixie shows up with Spritle and Chim-Chim. She suspects nothing just then. By then, Racer X is out of the shower and realizes what must have happened. Trixie sets off after the red car that left with Speed. The car has turned off the road into the woods, though, and changes its license plate from 1478 to 5539. The red color was simply a cover of some sort. After being pulled off, the car is now white. As they pull onto the road, Trixie sees them and suspects that they're the same car but can't catch them.

At the mansion, Racer X's mask is pulled off to reveal Speed. Meanwhile, Spritle and Chim-Chim have again stowed away and while peeking through the windows, Mr. Fixer sees them. Spritle is caught, but Chim-Chim escapes. Speed and Spritle are tied up in the basement. At 4:10 p.m. Trixie pulls in to a gas station asking the attendant if he saw a "red car, well a white car -- I mean first it was red then it turned into a white car." She only succeeds in confusing the attendant! Chim-Chim by now has run all the way back to Trixie and uses body language to tell her he knows where Speed and Spritle are. As Trixie begins racing towards Mr. Wiley's mansion, Chim-Chim sits on the hood of the car with horn. He does a pretty good impersonation of a police siren.

When Trixie finally finds them at Mr. Wiley's mansion, the "siren" distracts an armed thug guarding Speed and Spritle. As Speed kicks away the gun, he and Spritle run, but thug grabs the gun and shoots at them. Unfortunately, not-so-bright Mr. Wiley seems to have been storing many barrels of gasoline (or some other conveniently explosive liquid) in his basement. When the gunshots miss Speed and Spritle, the bullets hit the barrels and end up causing a chain reaction explosion. Everyone, good guy and bad, run for it, as the house goes up in flames. Trixie screams seeing flames and hearing gunshots thinking Speed and Spritle are in there. Racer X had arrived, though, and saved Speed and Spritle when they were knocked unconscious during their escape. He then asks Speed to stay out of the race because these men will play more dirty tricks. Of course, we know what Speed's response will be. So it seems that even though Pops half-convinced Speed to withdraw, Speed just couldn't help himself.

On race day, there are 36 cars at the starting line of "the most important race of the year." While Pops and Mom are watching the race on tv from home, the announcer says there is a new entrant, Happy Doodle, in the Mach Five. Ooh, that tricky Speed. Everyone, including the announcer and Pops and Mom at home, realize it must be Speed. At that point, Speed's parents go down to the track to watch in person. As the race begins, Racer X arrives just in time to take part. Again, Racer X asks Speed to get out of the race. During this, Sparky holds up a sign with "+4" in the 20th lap.

In the stands, Fixer tells Wiley he's set it up so that gasoline will be put in Racer X's radiator at the next pit stop. But wouldn't you know, Spritle and Chim-Chim overhear. They quickly run down to the pit and swap barrels. Racer X ends up getting water in his radiator, but the driver of Alpha Team car #1 gets gasoline in his. It quickly blows up, dazing him. As another Alpha Team car bumps Racer X's, Racer X's car loses a wheel. As Alpha Team car #3 tries to avoid the rogue wheel, he swerves and crashes. From the crowd, though, another bad guy uses a mirror to shine light in Racer X's eyes. X swerves. Then, Racer X purposely slides sidewise to reflect sun off his mirror into an Alpha Team car #3's eyes who hits X, spins, and crashes. Then, Racer X slides sideways again onto 2 wheels making a ramp out of his car. Alpha Team car #4 flies up the "ramp" and crashes. Two more Alpha Team cars, #2 and #3 hit Speed who swerves, then Racer X spins round causing more confusion. Alpha Team car #4 crashes. Racer X is hurt slightly, so Speed turns around to go help. But a race is a race, and they hop in their cars and go. On the last lap, Racer X has to push his car to the pit for repairs. Now, Alpha Team car #2 is in the lead, but not for long. The race finishes, first through third, with Speed, Racer X, and Zoomer Slick in car #2.

In the crowd, Pops jumps for joy and then pretends he's mad since Speed entered without his permission. At Trixie's and Sparky's urgings, Pops decides that Speed can become a racer. Speed, meanwhile, is thinking about the race he's won realizing that Racer X is a far better driver than he is. Speed runs outside the track to find Racer X, but he's hiding nearby. Speed's inner thoughts say, "The Masked Racer's gone. I wanted to ask him why he let me win." In the distance, Racer X says, "Speed, I hope you'll be the best racer in the world." He walks away and Speed turns around in surprise when he hears Racer X's car pull out and leave. "Huh? Someday I'll find out who he is. And someday we'll have a race between just the two of us."

5.) The Secret Engine, (Part 1)
Original Air Date: October 7, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: The Mystery of the Classic Car, (Beginning)

Speed takes Spritle and Chim Chim for a test drive in the Mach Five after Pops fine tunes the carburetor. While driving, they hear on the radio that Tongue Blaggard, head of an unscrupulous, worldwide organization with thousands of men, has escaped from Sung Along Prison and feared to be hiding in Hightax Town. Just then, Speed rounds a curve and spots an old bearded man, Mr. Klepto, Jr., and his granddaughter in an old but well cared for Model T. It has begun to rain and Speed offers to help the old man who, though he can barely manage the chore, is too stubborn to accept help. A half hour later, he finally has the top up - but the rain has stopped. Speed, Spritle, Chim Chim and Mr. Klepto's grand-daughter can't help laughing which greatly annoys Mr. Klepto.

Back at the racetrack, Fireball Rust is coaching Speed and other drivers in the finer points of professional racing. They practice like the races at Le Mans. That is, they run to their cars, jump in and take off. Rust tells Speed to do it. As he runs Speed falls then trips again trying to hop into the Mach Five. As the other racers get a good laugh out of it, Racer X is watching from the side. He does some fancy acrobatics, runs over to the Mach Five, hops in and takes off. He stops by his car, flips over to it and zooms away. Rust says that's the way to do it and that no one is better than Racer X at it.

Leaving the track, Speed, Spritle and Chim Chim come across Mr. Klepto, Jr. and his granddaughter on the road changing a flat tire. As Mr. Klepto again refuses help, he says that Speed does know the joys of driving since Speed's car has an automatic transmission. Speed shows him that that's not so and offers him a ride. Mr. Klepto admits to being impressed with the Mach Five. This results in a dinner invitation. At his house, we see that Mr. Klepto has adopted many, many children even though he is not rich. His grand-daughter is the only child related to him by blood.

Outside, Blaggard is driving by and spots Klepto's Model T and wonders if it's the one owned by Light Fingers Klepto many years ago. They steal the car and bring it back to Blaggard's large, underground hideout. When Mr. Klepto sees that his car is stolen, he tells Speed how it belonged to his father, Light Fingers. Even though his father was a criminal, Mr. Klepto loved him. Forty-five years ago, his father was double-crossed by his men and killed. His last words to his son, Mr. Klepto, were, "The car..." Mr. Klepto says that the car means very much to him and is a playmate of the children. Speed vows to help find the old Model T.

Back at home, Pops and Sparky are sad because they haven't had a single customer in their new business, Pops Motors. But Mom cheers them up saying that life is wonderful and would be perfect if only Rex would come back home. Rex is eavesdropping by the garage door and says to himself that he wants to come home but first wants to make Speed the best driver in the world. He drives off. In her helicopter, Trixie spots Mr. Klepto's Model T by the road. To help Pops' business, Trixie convinces Pops to do the first customer for free - which just happens to be Mr. Klepto. Then, as word gets out, all Model T owners in the are swamp Pops and Sparky with business, but they all have the same problem. This puzzles Speed who suspects it has something to do with Mr. Klepto's father, Light Fingers. Back at the Klepto's house, Speed digs up the old Model T engine and sees that it is engine number 9870000.

We then learn that in prison Blaggard learned from one of Light Fingers Klepto's double-crossed men that Light Fingers' engine will lead them to a billion dollars hidden somewhere in Misty Valley. As an obvious trap, Speed puts a flag with number 9870000 on the Mach Five and drives around, but Speed's plan works too well. Some of Blaggard's men spot the flag, notify Blaggard and an all out pursuit ensues. Speed loses one car and then the next as well. But a helicopter and more cars, including a troop carrying truck, are now following Speed and Mr. Klepto. At the same time Racer X is trying to come to their rescue but is unsure how to cross the mountainous terrain between him and Speed. But making a difficult situation still more difficult, the chopper sends down a ramp which is used by many motorcycles to come aground. They all have machine guns mounted on their windscreens. Speed zooms away doing his best to outrun Blaggard's small army.

6.) The Secret Engine, (Part 2)
Original Air Date: October 7, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: The Mystery of the Classic Car, (Conclusion)

Speed hits "B" on the steering wheel to engage the special belted tires so that the Mach Five can race up a mountain. He is then able to confront the bad guys head on causing many motorcycle crashes. Racer X has now arrived and helps get rid of some more bad guys. Speed thinks he's got the situation under control and leaps out of his car. He grabs a guy asking him who sent him. But just then the large helicopter hovers lower and tells Speed to look behind him. There is a huge hulk of a man, maybe 10 feet tall, named Tiny standing there. He knocks out Speed and Mr. Klepto and they're taken to Blaggard's hideout. After they come to and Blaggard threatens to have Tiny hit Mr. Klepto when he refuses to divulge where the Model T engine 9870000 is, Speed says he destroyed it but remember the numbers. He offers Blaggrd 1/3 of the money if he'll take them to Misty Valley to find it. Mr. Klepto, who sees this as his money left him by his father, offers to give Speed enough to be able to enter the Multipeak Race.

Blaggard agress to bring Speed and Klepto to Misty Valley. He even lets Speed call Pops at home to give an excuse as to why he'll be away all night. After telling Pops he'll be on a long drive with a friend, he says to tell Trixie that he can't afford the ring for $650 and she'll just have to forget about it. This is a secret code. On their way to Misty Valley, Speed tries to contact Trixie by radio but someone has taken some of the radio tubes and he can't.

Because Misty Valley is so far away, they all have to stop at an abandoned lodge for the night. While all of Blaggard's guys are snoring heavily, Speed tries to sneak out and contact the police on his radio, but Blaggard comes out to see what he's up to. Blaggard sees all the buttons on the steering wheel and asks about them. He pushes "G" and the homing robot shoots out and the panel on the console opens. Having a grand old time, Blaggard uses the joystick to control the bird-shaped robot and crashes it into the ground before bringing it airborne again. Then he hits the "H" button next to the joystick which, unknown to him, sends the robot home to the Racer family.

Late that night at the Racer's family home, Trixie bangs on the door wanting to give Speed a piece of her mind for standing her up and not going to the party that night. At the same time, Spritle is up for a midnight snack because, he tells Mom, the homing robot woke him up. Pops and Trixie realize something must be wrong. Thinking about the message from Speed to Trixie, about the $650 ring, our brilliant little Trixie says, "Pops! Add a couple of zeros to it and that's the red zone on the Mach Five's tachometer. That must mean Speed is in danger!!" Pops also notices that the robot has no note inside but has red clay on it. Later we find that Trixie realized the red clay comes from Misty Valley.

Next morning, a dirty but very pretty blond girl, Lana, who is native to the mountains, is picked up by Blaggard's men to be their guide. After flirting a bit with Speed we find out she's none other than Trixie in disguise! She knocks the bad guy in the car with them out of the Mach Five and tells Speed to go to the village ahead because Pops is waiting there for them. Speed uses the Mach Five's rotary saws to cut through the forest and escape Blaggard's men. At the village, they see Pops but soon discover that it is Blaggard dressed as Pops. Pops is tied up in the closet. Spritle and Chim Chim, however have stowed away in Trixie's helicopter out front and sneak out; but in doing so, Spritle's clothes are torn to shreds.

Blaggard then forces Speed to take them to the spot indicated by the numbers on the engine. They know they've found it because there's a big "X" on a boulder there! At that point, Blaggard decides it's okay to kill Speed, Pops and Trixie. But Chim Chim comes to the rescue leading a large group of monkeys to attack the bad guys. During it all, Pops yells, "Spritle you're liable to catch the sniffles dressed like that!" As Speed flips Tiny into a mountainside, rocks crash down, covering Tiny.

Blaggard shows up with a flame thrower, but Racer X hits all the bad guys with his car just in time. Blaggard, somehow unhurt, flees in his car. As Speed pursues in the Mach Five, Blaggard first drops oil, then lights it on fire, then drives on top of the water, but nothing stops Speed. As Blaggard gets to the other side of the lake, Speed surfaces. Blaggard has his chopper come down and pick him up, but Speed uses the homing robot to knock the briefcase of money out his hands. Blaggard and Speed run down to the case, and open it. When they do, the money turns to dust before their eyes.

Later, Inspector Detector makes his first appearance in the series and congratulates Speed on capturing a dangerous criminal. The reward money is $100,000. Speed decides to give it all to Mr. Klepto, Jr. who wants to open a home for children needing one. Pops says they'll all work hard to get money to send Speed to the Multipeak Race. Racer X watches all this from a hilltop.

7.) Race Against the Mammoth Car, (Part 1)
Original Air Date: October 14, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: The Challenge of the Mammoth Car, (Beginning)

Only moments from the start of the No Limit World Race, Trixie joins Speed in the Mach Five as his assistant. Spritle and Chim Chim also decide they should be able to stow away, but Pops puts a stop to that. Then Sparky argues that he should be Speed's assistant, not Trixie, because it will be too dangerous and tough for a girl. Speed tells them to stop arguing since the cars are getting into position at the starting line and wisely tells Sparky that Trixie will drive with him. Any kind of car can enter this race, and there is one very unusual entrant: the Mammoth Car. It is over 200 yards long and dwarfs every other car in the race.

Officials inspect all race cars. $50 million in gold bars have just been stolen from National Bank, according to Inspector Detector. He also says Cruncher Block was in charge of the gang who pulled off the heist. After an inspection, all cars are okayed. Before the race begins, Sparky crawls under the Mammoth Car to see if it has new inventions he doesn't know about. The driver, though, isn't impressed with Sparky's curiosity. He drags Sparky into a building and knocks him out. As the race is ready to begin we see Racer X. Soon after, "gorgeous Miss Racing Car" lowers the flag to begin the race.

Back at the building, Racer X helps Sparky up and is interested to hear that the Mammoth Car's driver did this to Sparky. As he helps Sparky up, Sparky says, "You look familiar." Out on the racing course, the Mammoth Car is forcing many cars off the road. At one point, even the Mach Five is forced out out of the way and has to use its grip tires to drive along the side of a mountain to avoid being crushed by the Mammoth Car. As the lights begin to flash at a railroad crossing, the Mammoth Car continues ahead trying to beat the train but doesn't.

The train flies apart with its cargo of pigs wandering loose. While Speed and Trixie get out to help the engineer clean up, they see the Mammoth Car's small army of mechanics repairing its slight damage. Back on the road Speed comments that it's strange that the Mammoth Car suffered so little damage and suspect that it's hiding some sort of secret cargo. He and Trixie decide to send the homing robot out with an x-ray camera to see what the contents are. A guy in the Mammoth Car sees this, though, and after shooting the camera, calls his boss, Cruncher Block, halfway around the world to report this. Block decides the Mach Five must be taken out.

While driving beside the Mammoth Car, a blast pushes the Mach Five off the road. While Speed drives down the mountainside, the Mammoth Car puts out a ramp on which many bad guys on motorcycles come racing down. But luckily, up from behind comes Racer X who drops oil causing many of the bikers to crash. At the same time, Cruncher Block arrives in an airport having decided to come "finish off the Mach Five." But Spritle and Chim Chim, who were at the airport with Pops and Sparky trying to get a plane to catch up with and help Speed, decide to stow away in Block's plane after hearing his comments.

On the racing course, a large hill slows down the Mammoth Car giving Speed an opportunity to catch up with it, but then the Mammoth Car pushes the Mach Five off the road. Now running from the Mammoth Car, Speed uses the Mach Five's rotary saws to cut through the forest. The Mammoth Car simply uses its large momentum to snap the trees out of its way. Out of the forest, Speed tries to use the saws to slash one of the Mammoth Car's tires. He does, but it has no effect. The train-like Mammoth Car is able to almost completely encircle the Mach Five and guns emerge from its sides aimed at the Mach Five. Speed puts up the bullet-proof cover and springs out from the circling Mammoth Car. But the Mammoth bumps the Mach Five in midair sending it into Lake Icy Chill.

8.) Race Against the Mammoth Car, (Part 2)
Original Air Date: October 14, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: The Challenge of the Mammoth Car, (Conclusion)

The Mammoth Car crew thinks they've finished off Speed and Trixie. Speed has the underwater oxygen supply and periscope in action. After the Mammoth Car leaves, they emerge and continue their pursuit. Trixie records a summary of what they've discovered, puts it in the homing robot, and sends it off to Inspector Detector. By now, Cruncher Block's plane is coming up on the Mammoth Car and spots the Mach Five on the highway. There is an abandoned chemical plant of some kind which the Mammoth Car uses as its secret refueling spot. They decide to ambush Speed and Trixie there. They are knocked out and then tied to a mining car. Since Block is done with the refueling depot, he decides to kill two birds with one stone; he'll collide a car carrying dynamite with the car Speed and Trixie are on. That way he'll get rid of these annoying kids and destroy the depot and all traces of the Mammoth Car's use of it.

About then, Spritle and Chim Chim sneak out of Block's plane and plan on helping Speed and Trixie. Unfortunately, as the car is racing down the tracks through the mine, Spritle only makes things worse by furthering tangling the ropes. Where the tracks join and the cars will collide, Racer X has arrived and throws the switch so that they each take different tracks. Just as he unties Speed, Trixie - and now Spritle who got himself tangled up, the other car blows up. Speed is looking at Racer X and his inner thoughts say, "There's something about him that reminds me of Rex, my older brother." Everyone safely emerges from the mine but are covered head to toe in black soot from the explosion! The next morning Spritle sees the beautiful sunrise and exclaims, "Looks like it's gonna be a groovy day!"

At the race's checkpoint, Inspector Detector and Pops wait nervously. When the cars stop, the police want to inspect the Mammoth Car. They again find nothing. As the Mach Five pulls up, Spritle and Chim Chim get out of the Mach Five and hop on the Mammoth Car as it pulls away. Speed sees this and tries desperately to catch up. At the finish line, it is an exact tie but neither car slows down. The Mammoth Car is racing towards the pier and Speed is trying to catch it first.

On board the Mammoth Car, Chim Chim stands on Spritle's shoulders so that they appear to be an adult mechanic. They use, what else, a wrench to knock out other mechanics they encounter. Finally they reach the cockpit and hold a "gun" - actually a rod of some sort - to the back of the driver telling him to not drive on the ship. Instead the Mammoth Car is going in circles but headed towards a huge oil tank. Speed leaps on and saves Spritle and Chim Chim just after the Mammoth Car slams into the oil tank and bursts into flames. The heat of the fire melts the car and everyone realizes that the gold was built into the car itself and so was never spotted by the inspectors. Because the Mammoth Car was disqualified, Speed is declared the winner. Inspector Detector gives Speed the trophy and congratulates him. Spritle is annoyed at not being thanked, but not to worry. Inspector Detector hands him and Chim Chim a smaller trophy filled with candy.

9.) The Most Dangerous Race, (Part 1)
Original Air Date: October 21, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: The Evil Car Acrobat Clan, (Beginning)

At the Stunt Car Spectacular, Guts Wheeler tries and fails to jump a high stack of cars. Driver High Octane has the same problem. Speed is then approached by Snake Oiler and taunted by him for not not trying to jump the stack of cars. Snake has the stack made higher and then jumps it successfully. Snake, it turns out, is part of the Car Acrobatic Team. Trixie tells Speed not to try to outdo Oiler, risking himeself and the Mach Five, since he'll be in the upcoming Alpine Race. At this point, the entire Car Acrobatic Team comes driving---or flying---in, sailing over the heads of Speed, Trixie and the crowd.

In the Alps, Sparky tells Speed not to enter the Alpine Race because the Car Acrobatic Team will be using dirty tricks. Speed gets a wee tad huffy and yells at Sparky, who sulks away, his feelings hurt. Speed is practicing in the Mach Five on the special race course. In his thoughts, he says he will beat the Car Acrobatic Team. Speed than says he'll drive better than the best driver he's seen, Racer X. He sees Snake in his mind as he thinks this. Speed knows that Racer X can beat Snake, and figures he can, too. Pops tells Speed it's now time to practice the first chasm jump of the Alpine Race. Pops tells Speed if he doesn't make the jump, he will fall a 1,000 feet to the river below.

Before Speed can start, he sees the Car Acrobatic Team approaching the chasm and they all sail across to the other side with no problem. Speed starts his first run down the mountain and is interrupted by Racer X. He has come to warn Speed about the dangers of the race. Just as they stop, a landslide crashes down the mountainside. Racer X gives Speed his best advice on how to survive the race.

Speed: "What's the big idea, Racer X?"

Racer X: "I came to warn you. It's too dangerous. Be careful of falling rocks like those. Last year, they wiped out a dozen drivers who could have crossed easily."

       Speed: "How?"

Racer X: "Just by keeping their minds on their driving and the obstacles in the way. But most drivers are worried about the cars ahead of them and how to catch up and pass them, so they sometimes forget to concentrate on the course itself. The plateau areas around here are very tricky. The ground is hard, but when it rains heavily, the ground loosens and changes and tires skid treacherously. Take my advice, Speed, otherwise this will be your last race. Very few cars ever reach the finish line. It's just too dangerous."

Speed: "Then you don't think I can win, Racer X?"

Racer X: "You can only if you keep your mind on the hazards of the course. Oh, one more thing, Speed. Listen carefully. As you race down toward the big jump, don't be going too fast, because you'll cause another landslide and crash down into the river. Also, when you reach the other side and start to climb again, don't try to go straight up toward the top. Zigzag along the slope. It takes longer, but it's safer, and in the long run, you'll pick up some time. Remember, throughout the whole area, they're patches of ice. One wrong twist of your steering wheel and that'll be the end of you. You'll find this is the toughest course you've ever raced and you'll need every ounce of experience and skill, Speed."

Speed: "Thanks for the advice. I'll try to follow all of it, Racer X."

Racer X: "Heh heh, because if you don't run a good race, I won't enjoy winning."

Speed: "You'll be in the Alpine Race?"

Racer X: "Speed, I'm going to win the Alpine Race. I'm not going to give you a break, hmm hmm."

Pops is redesigning the Mach Five while nearby Spritle and Chim Chim try their hands at building a car. They take it out for a drive and find the Car Acrobatic Team at some sort of midnight ritual. They're standing in rows and columns by their cars holding torches. Seven have entered the Alpine Race. A racer, Kobra, reads the entrants: Tiger, Knuckles, Brawn, Ugly, Poison, Ender, and Snake. He finishes by commanding, "Do everything to win. Stop at nothing. And if you have to break the law--break it."

During this little ritual, Spritle took photos that shows that the Car Acrobatic Team cars have little wings. Pops will again redesign the Mach Five. Pops, overworked, has a fever and collapses. Trixie takes him to the hospital, and Speed works alone to finish the Mach Five. Sparky's pride still wounded from Speed's remarks, won't shown up. At 4:30 a.m., the race is set to begin with an expected audience of a million people. Eighty-six cars have entered the race which is expected to last 3 days. The race starts at 5:00 a.m. but while Speed is still at home working on the car. He finishes and speeds to the race with only 15 seconds to spare. Sparky wishes Speed luck from the stands. The Alpine Race is well underway and there have already been several bad crashes. Speed notices the Mach Five's breaks aren't working as well as they should be.

10.) The Most Dangerous Race, (Part 2)
Original Air Date: October 21, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: The Evil Car Acrobat Clan, (Middle)

At the first checkpoint, Speed is warned about bad weather ahead. The brakes are still not working well, and Speed wishes Sparky hadn't left. Sparky, Spritle, and Chim Chim are racing along the road to catch up with and help Speed. Trixie is flying in her chopper to warn Speed about the Mach Five's brakes herself. On the way she spots Sparky, Spritle and Chim Chim stopped and out of gas! They all hop in the chopper and continue on their way.

In an ice cave, the Car Acrobatic Team hit stalactites to hamper Speed, but some them end up crashing as a result. Meanwhile, the Mach Five's brakes are not working at all. Speed goes off the road and down a mountainside at Skull Chasm. He is doing his best to control the car, but having trouble without brakes or a smooth driving surface. As Trixie flies near, Sparky lassoes the car and save Speed and the Mach Five. Speed and Sparky make up, and Sparky fixes the breaks. Before Speed starts off again, Spritle gives him his good luck charm (a cute doll with a straw hat). Speed and his party camp out for the evening after the Mach Five's brakes are repaired. Speed awakes later to discover that a big storm is moving in. He says farewell to Sparky and drives out to rejoin the race. As Speed is driving along the course, he occasionally looks at the good luck charm hanging on the rear-view mirror that Spritle gave him the night before.

Speed catches up with the other racers, but he sees they are stopped at Yawning Chasm Pass. He parks the Mach Five and hops out to ask Snake how come they are stopped. He points out to Speed that the heavy rains have completely washed away parts of the course. Oiler maintains it's going to be tough, but Speed asks him if there's another way and Snake says there isn't. And when they try to get through, they'll cause even more landslides and their tires won't take hold of that wet ground. Snake decides to draw lots to see which one of them will go first. It will be more dangerous for each car following.

Snake reprimands the race drivers who refuse to step forward in the drawing by saying, "What's a matter with you guys? Are you racing car drivers or chickens?!" Three members of the Car Acrobatic Team step forward for the drawing of the lots. Speed makes up his mind and joins the drawing. Snake then points out. "Well, finally, now we know who the brave men are and who're the chickens."

Out of nowhere appears the mysterious Racer X, who calmly says, "Wait a minute. I'm staying in the race and I want to join the drawing to see who the first driver will be." Snake maintains he will be the only one to get through. Racer X comments, "Well, I'm glad you're safe, Speed. But you have only one life, so you better be careful."

The racers draw the matches and each one has a mark on it that will determine who will go first. Ender draws the first position and Brawn draws the second position. The next Car Acrobatic Team member is Tiger, who draws third place. Racer X takes his turn and is in the fifth position. Snake cackles when Speed draws his match and he gets the last position. Snake draws his match and says he'll be in the fourth position.

Snake instructs Ender and Brawn to start their engines and go. They both accelerate and drive through the wet, muddy ground toward the chasm. They make the jump together and get to the first cliff, but their back tires lose traction and they fall down the deep chasm. Tiger is up next and fares even worse. He makes the jump and his car crashes head on into the mountainside and falls to the river below. This prompts Racer X to comment to Snake, "The drivers on the Car Acrobatic Team are supposed to be better than that."

Snake acknowledges to Racer X and Speed the Acrobatic Team is better and boasts, "They are. I'll show you. Just watch. I'm going to make the jump safely and prove to you what a fabulous driver I am." He takes off and makes the jump over the two sections of the course and then edges upward to the highest peak above the chasm to safety. Racer X tells Speed before he makes the jump:

"Every time a driver tries to make it across, some more of the earth caves in. And it's going to be even worse when we try to make the jump. But, as a professional racer, I've got to meet the challenge. If you're smart, you'll give up the race, but if you don't, good luck."

Racer X is next and his chasm jump is very impressive. He makes it to the other side and the wings he installed on the car assist him in doing so. Speed is the last one in the lot who must get across the chasm. Two of the racing drivers that backed out of the drawing tell him not to try it, as he will never make it across. Speed sits in the Mach Five and remembers what Racer X told him; "As a professional racer, I've got to meet the challenge."

Speed has made up his mind that he's going to meet the challenge and make the chasm jump. He grabs the cute doll, with the straw hat, hanging from his rear-view mirror and in his mind, he hears Spritle's voice say, "It will bring you plenty of good luck." He starts up the Mach Five's engine and gets the car in gear. Speed accelerates down the muddy course and activates the auto-jacks that take him over the chasm to the first section of roadway. With the Mach Five airborne, Speed hits the switch that activates the wings that stick out from the sides of the car.

The Mach Five lands on the second section of roadway and than Speed jumps to get to the mountain peak that rises above it. But when the Mach Five lands at the edge, the ground under the back tires gives out. The car falls out of control to the river below, with Speed in a frightened panic. At the valley floor, the remains of the cars who attempted to make the chasm jump are buried in the mud, smashed to bits. Laying on the ground is the cute doll with the straw hat.

11.) The Most Dangerous Race, (Part 3)
Original Air Date: October 21, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: The Evil Car Acrobat Clan, (Conclusion)

Meanwhile, at the nearby lodge, Sparky, Trixie, Spritle and Chim Chim await the news from the racing official. According to the bulletin, not much information is available because of the storm. But apparently, more than a dozen racers, including members of the Car Acrobatic Team and the Mach Five, have had their way blocked near Yawning Chasm Pass. The racing committee is considering changing the course to a less dangerous area, before the cars and drivers are completely wiped out. Just as he finishes telling them the news, two racers enter the lodge and look like they are exhausted. Trixie and Sparky ask them if they have seen the other racers. The two men tell the group, "Most of them will never come back! There was nothing left of them, including cars of the Car Acrobatic Team." The racers including Speed and members of the Car Acrobatic Team were stupid enough to try and go ahead and make it from one cliff to the other and failed. The team runs out of the lodge in hopes they can locate Speed and help him to safety. They board the jeep and only get so far until they run out of gas. Trixie and the others are dejected and they fall asleep.

Trixie awakes in a rugged mountainous location. The skies are red with swirling white clouds. She sees Speed driving the Mach Five past her right shoulder and the car parks. But she can't see Speed directly for the moment. Trixie slowly runs over to him and exclaims, "Speed, oh Speed!" He is standing with his back facing her and she embraces him. He then turns around and faces her, only for it to be a gargoyle who exclaims, "Heehhaa! I am not Speed Racer, Speed Racer no longer exists!" His face is very ugly, with a long chin and horns that are protruding from the helmet. His arms are red with shooting flames and he grabs Trixie, who is screaming in horror. The evil gargoyle keeps laughing as Trixie keeps screaming. She awakes to discover she had a nightmare.

It's the morning and the storm has moved out. Speed regains consciousness on the valley floor, but only to discover that he is blind. The impact from the long fall down the chasm has somehow done this to him. He gets up and tries to walk, but not being able to see, he falls down again. Crawling along the ground, Speed grabs hold of an object that is nearby with his right hand and knows what it is. He warmly says to himself, "It's Spritle's good luck charm." He remembers what Spritle's last words to him were, saying, "If you carry it with you, it'll bring you good luck and you'll win."

Speed hears a car's engine pull up and wonders who it can be. It turns out to be Snake Oiler. He is amazed that Speed is still alive and begins to degrade him. He mocks Speed when he learns that he is now blind. Snake vows that he is going to win the Alpine Race and exclaims, "I'm on my way to victory!" He then drives off to continue the race. Speed is able to smell the oil from the Mach Five's engine and is able to locate the car. He gets in and starts it, but can't drive. The mysterious Racer X appears.

Racer X has a plan in mind to help Speed. He hops in the Shooting Star and guns the engine. Speed recognizes the sound of the car and gets the Mach Five in gear. Racer X pulls out and Speed begins to follow him on the course. Along the way, Speed does have difficulty following Racer X and spins out. The Mach Five's back tires get caught in a deep mud puddle. Racer X is watching and, in his thoughts, he hopes Speed will ease it out gently. Speed gives it up and Racer X drives off. He thinks Racer X has abandoned him to resume the race. But, Racer X, in his thoughts, just can't leave him there like that. What can he do to help Speed?

Racer X finds the answer and deliberately crashes the Shooting Star into a rock wall, but he jumps out before the car crashes on impact. Speed is able to hear the Shooting Star crash and explode. He says it sounded like a bad crash and he hopes that Racer X isn't hurt too badly. Speed calls out to him and they find each other. In his intimate thoughts, Rex admires Speed and is proud to have him as his younger brother.

Racer X tells Speed that his legs have been broken and he realizes Speed has become blinded. Then, he tells Speed, that Snake Oiler is the only one of the Car Acrobatic Team who is continuing in the race, and the Mach Five is the only other car left. Speed still wants to beat Snake, but the question is how? Racer X's legs are broken and Speed cannot see. Racer X comes up with an idea that might work; that Speed will be his legs and at the same time, Racer X will be his eyes. Perhaps they can overtake Snake and win.

The Mach Five is back on the course, now piloted with Racer X, who is helping Speed navigate on the course. Trixie is finally able to locate Speed in the helicopter by flying over the course. She contacts him with the radio transmitter. Sparky, Spritle and Chim-Chim are with her. Speed doesn't tell her that he is blind, but she thinks he's fibbing to her. Speed tells Trixie that he'll meet her at the finish line. The Mach Five accelerates even faster, with the odometer reading 7410 km. Racer X sees Snake Oiler's car up ahead in the distance and tells his younger brother, "I see him. He's just ahead. At last, Speed, we've caught up to him."

Snake sees the Mach Five in his rear-view mirror and exclaims, "The Mach Five, and I thought I was the only driver left in the race!" His car accelerates greatly, and up ahead in the distance, is an old, wooden bridge that runs over a deep abyss. Snake maintains of Speed, "He'll never be able to follow me over this chasm."

Snake's car goes airborn and it lands on the wooden bridge. As he is driving across it, the sections he drove over are collapsing and falling into the deep chasm. He makes it to the other side and challenges Speed by saying, "Go ahead, Speed. It's your turn to get over that without crashing down to those rocks in the bottom." Back in the Mach Five, the broken bridge is seen by Racer X. He and Speed converse.

Racer X: "Speed, there's a broken bridge up ahead. Use your brakes."

Speed: "Snake managed to get across it, didn't he? So will I."

Racer X: "How? That bridge is falling apart. Speed, you'd better use the brakes before it's too late and we smash up."

Speed: "Tell me when we get to the broken bridge. I'm going to try to get across it."

Racer X: "The Acrobatic Team's cars have special equipment for flying. The Mach Five can't do it. Use the brake!"

Speed: "I'm giving her the gas."

Racer X: "Stop! Speed, we can't make it. Jam on the brakes! Quick!

The Mach Five goes airborn when Speed hits the auto-jacks and activates the wings. The car lands on the wooden bridge, but it is now in worse condition and weakened since Snake drove across it. The Mach Five is able to accelerate quickly, as the bridge is rapidly collapsing and falling into the deep chasm. Speed makes it to the other side safely. Racer X is dismayed and tells Speed, "You made it! I don't think you would have been able to do it with your eyes open." Speed replies, "There was no other way, I had to make it. Now I gotta win."

Captain Terror and the Car Acrobatic Team are waiting at the finish line. Racer X notices that Snake's car is leaking oil. Speed warns him, but he ignores this as if Speed's lying to trick him, so he'd have to stop his car and lose the race. They are almost at the finish line and Snake declares his impending victory. "I'm gonna win. I'm gonna beat Speed. Ha ha ha." His car catches on fire and explodes with Snake screaming as the fire is right behind the cabin where he's seated. The Mach Five passes Snake Oiler's car, which is engulfed in flames and parts of his car are blown across the finish line. The Mach Five crosses the finish line and Speed wins the race. At the finish line, Speed is honored as the winner of the race.

Captain Terror and the Car Acrobatic Team are standing around Snake's burned-up car. The Captain picks him up and carries the injured Snake and stops in stride to address his team. Captain Terror vows to his men that there will be other races and chances for vengeance against Speed Racer and the Mach Five. Snake says, "I'll get revenge". The team leaves to go home and drives off the track. Speed asks Trixie if she has seen Racer X, so he can thank him. But she says she hasn't seen him in the Mach Five since the victory celebration. Speed realizes that Racer X was pretending his legs were broken, and he said that to him, just so he could help him win the race. Speed believes that Racer X deserves the trophy and not for himself. Trixie then tells Speed it is more important to go to the doctors, so he can regain his eyesight.

       Speed Racer note:

The original Japanese episode title is The Evil Car Acrobat Clan. They were initially featured in the second manga story that was titled Challenge of the Masked Racer. The story centered on Racer X and Speed competing in the Alpine Race. The team's leader is Captain Terror and he is Speed's main opponent. The manga is substantially different from the three-part anime story.

In the manga, Racer X pays Spritle and Chim Chim a visit in the backyard and gives them a letter that is for Speed. It's private and challenges Speed to a race to see how good his racing skills are. Racer X hopes he can make Speed realize his driving skills aren't good enough for the Alpine Race. Racer X's other reason is he's concerned that Speed's safety will be endangered by him being in the race. Speed drives to Hawk's Ridge Circuit to meet him at 2:00 a.m. that morning.

These segments weren't contained in The Most Dangerous Race, but were carried over to the anime in Challenge of the Masked Racer instead. Another part of the story in the three-part episode that wasn't in the manga is when Speed and Pops first see the Car Acrobatic Team sailing over the chasm. Pops tells him he's got to make it or he'll fall a 1,000 feet into the river. This is when Racer X intervenes and gives him advice on how to survive the Alpine Race.

Sparky wasn't featured in the manga and the problem with the Mach Five is Speed didn't replace the spark plugs before the race begins. In the anime, Sparky leaves after having an argument with Speed. The brakes aren't working right and they get worse as the race progresses. They are repaired later when Speed reunites with Sparky. The mission Spritle and Chim Chim embark on to spy on the Acrobatic Team at midnight wasn't in the manga, nor was the team's ritual, but was featured in the anime.

Snake Oiler wasn't in the manga, but he was created for the anime to be Speed's main opponent in the Alpine Race. In the story, it's learned Kobra is his brother. The latter character was featured in the manga. The deep chasm is called Devil's Gorge, but in the anime it's known as Yawning Chasm Pass. The Car Acrobatic Team and the other drivers are stopped for an hour at Devil's Gorge when Speed arrives. The storm has caused landslides and parts of the course have been completely wiped away.

This is the sequence in the manga. One of the Car Acrobatic Team drivers tries to make the jump, but falls into the gorge and is killed. Captain Terror decides to draw lots and pulls out ten matches. Each driver will draw and the mark on the match will tell him what position he'll be in to make the jump. Speed draws first and races down the mountain to make the jump. But the cliff on the other side is giving out and he ends up crashing the Mach Five on the valley floor and is blinded. Three of the Acrobatic Team members try to jump across the gorge, but they don't make it and get killed. Kobra is among them. Captain Terror decides he'll drive down the gorge instead of jumping across and makes it. The remaining drivers lose their nerve and leave as Racer X calls them a bunch of cowards. He drives his car down the gorge and makes it safely.

The anime version is similar, but Snake Oiler holds the drawing and pulls out six matches. Three of the Acrobatic Team members make the chasm jump and fail. Snake tells the other drivers what a fabulous driver he is and makes the jump to the other side. Racer X is up next and he makes it, too. Speed drew the sixth position and is last. He makes the jump and almost makes it, but the mountain gives out and he falls to the river below.

In part three of the anime, Trixie suffers a nightmare with Speed turning out to be a gargoyle. This wasn't in the manga. The spark plugs in the Mach Five need to be replaced, so Speed radios Trixie and she delivers them by helicopter. Speed installs the spark plugs and gets the Mach Five going. This wasn't contained in the anime. In the manga, Racer X comes across Speed, but doesn't realize he's blind. He follows Racer X on the course, but he spins out and gets stuck. Racer X ends up losing control and jumps out before his car explodes.

For the anime, it was changed so Racer X crashing his car on purpose and Speed finds him as in the manga. The broken bridge crossing is seen in the manga, with Captain Terror making it across, but in the anime, it's Snake Oiler who drives across the bridge. In the manga, Captain Terror is the only surviving Acrobatic Team driver who is ahead of Speed. In the anime, it's Snake Oiler who is the only one that's continuing in the race.

In the finale of the manga, Speed and Racer X see Captain Terror's car is leaking oil and warn him to stop. He thinks Speed is lying to him, so he'll lose the race. Just before he reaches the finish line, his car catches on fire and explodes. Speed wins the Alpine Race and wants to thank Racer X for helping him. He was able to walk away and pretended his legs were broken, so he could help Speed win the race. The latter segment was in the anime. The paramedics arrive and put Captain Terror on a stretcher to get him to the hospital. He praises Speed for trying to save his life. In the anime, it's Snake Oiler who gets seriously injured when his car blows up just before the finish line.

Just after Speed is crowned the winner, the scene shifts to Snake with the rest of the Car Acrobatic Team surrounding him. Captain Terror carries him and comes to a stop. He announces they are defeated by Speed and the Mach Five. Snake Oiler vows to get revenge. Captain Terror agrees and says there will be other races and chances for vengeance. They leave and go home. These story changes were made in the anime to showcase the Car Acrobatic Team. It also spawned a sequel, The Trick Race.

12.) Race for Revenge, (Part 1)
Original Air Date: October 28, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: The Revenge of Marengo, (Beginning)

Speed is at a test track and whizzes by Sparky and Trixie. Sparky times Speed at 44 seconds and an average Speed of 180. This is a test trial for a new engine in the Mach Five in preparation for the upcoming Race at Danger Pass. Just then, a black sports car enters the track and easily catches up and then tailgates Speed. Speed uses the auto-jacks to leap out of the way of the naughty tailgater. At trackside, Sparky says the car had to be going over 220 mph. Speed is still mad at the driver's recklessness. Soon after, we see the same car driving down the street in a city, and again begins to tailgate someone. As it flashes its highbeams, the driver looks in his rearview mirror to see, on the hood the car, "X-3" flashing. This scares him, but before he can do anything, the X-3 says something unintelligible, passes him, turns around, and hits him head-on knocking him off the road. An "X-3" calling card is left at the scene.

Later, Mr. Herring of the Racing Car Association is with Speed in Inspector Detector's office at Police Headquarters. Speed is immediately certain that the cause of the car crash must have been the reckless driver on the test track. Mr. Herring is less sure claiming that he never heard of such a car. Inspector Detector asks Herring if "X-3" means anything to him; it was left at the scene of the crime. Herring says no, but becomes clearly agitated and says he must leave to "take care of something immediately." Using his car phone, he calls Mr. Green, the president of Ocean Industries and tells him the accident was caused by Bangler's car. Herring tells his friend not to travel at night, but the Ocean Industries president says he has business, even at night, to tend to. Mr. Green is tailgated and ran off the road into the ocean by the X-3.

The next morning Speed is polishing the Mach Five and hears the police report about the accident on the radio. Just then, Trixie comes up with a picnic basket, looking forward to a nice drive in the country and a picnic. Speed, ever the responsible racer, is pondering why the car is going after race officials. But as Speed and Trixie are about to pull off for a romantic drive, Inspector Detector pulls up asking for Speed's help. The Mach Five, he says, is much faster than the slow police cars, which have no hope of catching the X-3. Trixie is annoyed at the cancellation after having worked hard to prepare a wonderful picnic basket. On the inspector's radio, we hear a report that the black sports car is spotted going south on Highway 5 at 180 mph. Speed roughly pushes Trixie from the Mach Five saying it's too dangerous and speeds off. Trixie wonders where Spritle got to.

In the city, the X-3 is causing havoc running through fruit stands and scaring pedestrians. Speed is following but loses the car around a corner. He stops at a nearby flower shop, but the cute girl working there says she hasn't seen the black sports car. At that point, Trixie radios to Speed that she's spotted the car five blocks away from her chopper. She's helping Speed in the hopes that they'll still get their picnic in the country. Speed slowly gains on the X-3 which approaches a railroad crossing just as the gates are coming down. The car makes it under, but the driver is torn from the seat and hangs over the crossing gate. Speed runs up and discovers that the driver is a robot. It says something that Speed can't make out over the noise of the train.

At the police station, Inspector Detector, Speed and Trixie look at the robot. The Inspector deduces the car must have been remote controlled via the robot. Speed mentions that he couldn't hear what the robot said, but as luck would have it, Spritle had recorded it on his spy recorder he brought along in the Mach Five trunk. After demanding cake for the tape, Inspector Detector promises him a seven later chocolate cake when the investigation is complete. When played, the tape lets us clearly hear, "Malange still races" repeated several times. Trying to figure out what that means, Speed mentions that he learned about Napoleon's horse, Malange, in French history and that the horse had saved his life once.

But Pops says he remembers another story. Fifteen years ago at Danger Pass, Mr. Black and Green, the men recently killed by the X-3, were coaching a team expected to win the race but were afraid that a young driver, Flash Marker, would be able to win instead. Fifty cars entered the race, and during the first half, it was anybody's race. During the second half, though, Flash began passing everyone. But at the entrance of Danger Pass, a car from the Three Roses Club cut him off. To avoid hitting him, Flash, driving his Malange, swerved and went off the edge of the mountain. No one knew if it was done on purpose or not, but Pops remembered that Flash had two small children at the time.

Afterwards, Inspector Detector drops Speed and Trixie off at the same flower shop Speed had stopped at when chasing and losing the X-3. While the girl, Lily, is worried that a detective is there, she still, at Inspector Detector's request, brings them to see her brother, Flash, Jr., who has been sick in bed for three weeks now. The inspector leaves satisfied when Flash, Jr. says he knows nothing about the black sports car. Alone with her brother, Lily breaks down crying saying she won't lie again for Flash. On crutches, he asks her to follow him to see his newest plan now that the robot was lost. Through a secret door under his bed, he brings her down into a huge cellar he built without her knowledge. A crane takes off the body of the X-3 and replaces it with a similar looking one numbered "3." Forcing Lily into the car and controlling it remotely on his indoor track, he scares her into agreeing to enter the Race at Danger Pass to take revenge against the Three Roses Club for their father's murder. Flash said if he's better, he'll join her in the race.

At the race, the announcer is naming some of the world famous drivers: in car #6 is Skid Chill, driving car #77 is Sooten Grime, in #86 is Scootem Rooter, and of course Speed is in the Mach Five. The owners of the Three Roses Club are worried about Speed winning, but the drivers says they know what to do to get rid of him. But the same drivers get very worried when car #3 pulls up driven by, the announcer says, Miss Julie. They know it's the Malange that they caused to crash 15 years ago. Meanwhile, Trixie learns from Spritle and hides in the trunk before the race starts. She seems jealous that Speed is interested in Miss Julie, though Speed is simply wondering why she looks familiar.

Overhead, Flash, Jr. is hovering in his helicopter controlling the X-3, aka car #3. At Danger Pass, the three cars from the Three Roses Club prepare for their dirty work to get rid of the Mach Five. But Flash has car #3 move ahead, and the number on the hood flips to reveal "X-3." As the car passes the Mach Five, Lily passes out under the pressure of the situation. Her helmet falls off, and Speed recognizes her. Flash realizes Speed is onto the plan, and decides he also has to get rid of the Mach Five.

13.) Race for Revenge, (Part 2)
Original Air Date: October 28, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: The Revenge of Marengo, (Conclusion)

Recognizing Lily, Speed realizes that the X-3 must be remotely controlled by Flash, Jr. When Flash fails at his attempt to do in Speed, he remarks that Speed is the best driver he's ever seen. He decides to leave Speed be for now, and take his revenge against the Three Roses Club. The announcer tells us that car #6 is in the lead, with car #12 following next, and the Three Rose Club cars close behind. At checkpoint three, he announces that the average speed is 143.7 mph. Pops is nervously pacing to and fro with Spritle and Chim Chim each under an arm. Sparky tells Pops to relax since there are still three hours to go in the race. Spritle agrees, telling Pops he can hardly breath, since Pops is holding him so hard. Wondering where Trixie is, Spritle guesses correctly that she's in the trunk of the Mach Five.

Speed, meanwhile, is amazed at the X-3, saying it might even be better than the Mach Five. Trying to catch up, he complains to himself that it feels like there is some extra weight in the trunk. Stopping, he finds Trixie there. They hop in and take off again, but not until Speed complains that Trixie shouldn't be there. She says there's nothing to be done about it now, and they better start off again. Speed says, "You're right again, as usual." Nearing Danger Pass, the Three Roses Club cars, #7, #8, and #9, begin to take out the competition. Cars #6 and #12 are knocked off the mountain.

By now, the X-3 has caught up as they approach Danger Pass. Flash radios Lily to wake up so she can enjoy the vengeance taken for the father's death. But Lily remains unconscious. As the Mach Five continues to gain, Speed spots Flash's chopper and tells Trixie that he saw it before when he was chasing the black sports car. She recommends using the homing robot. She records a message to Inspector Detector that car #3 is the remotely controlled Malange and that Lily is in danger. The homing robot is sent on its way.

At Danger Pass, the X-3 catches up with the Three Roses Club team. Lily begs Flash not to continue with his plan. Flash ignores her and has the X-3 push one of the cars off the mountain. One of the other drivers babbles, "I was just following orders. I didn't mean it." And off he's bumped. Speed cuts across the mountain terrain and is able to drive back on the road and place himself between the Malange and the sole surviving Three Roses car. Flash, pretty annoyed by this, flies low enough to shoot at Speed. The bulletproof cockpit glass protects them, but the sound of the bullet firing starts an avalanche that buries the Mach Five and blocks the way of the Malange.

Worried about their oxygen supply, Speed climbs out and gets out of the snow, and helps Trixie do the same. But Flash is there and threatens to kill them for interfering. Luckily, Lily tackles flash, who's still walking with a crutch. He and Speed fight over the gun. A shot goes off and causes another avalanche covering the two of them. Flash gets out, thinking Speed is dead, and flies off in his chopper. Speed then unburies himself but is hurt. Since he's in shock, Lily decides he needs to be kept warm and uses her body to do the job. But before Speed gets to enjoy this, Trixie pushes her away in jealousy it seems.

Back at the track, the homing robot makes its way to Inspector Detector and he is off in the helicopter with Pops, Sparky, Spritle and Chim Chim to apprehend Flash, Jr. The inspector tells Pops Speed is a clever boy for figuring it out. Down on the track, Speed, Trixie and Lily decide they better get the Mach Five out to go catch Flash, who is now caught up with the Three Roses Club car. While driving, we see the Mach Five's speedometer reading 240 km/h, the odometer at 502214 km, and the tripometer at 1162. First they see Flash's chopper and then manage to catch up with the driverless Malange itself. Speed tells Trixie to drive the Mach Five while he jumps into the Malange. When she says she's afraid, Speed tells her, "This is no time to act like a girl."

Speed leaps into the Malange to shut it off, but Flash comes on the radio telling him the remote is in the chopper, not the car. He tells Speed to enjoy the ride because it'll be his last. Trying to remain calm, Speed thinks and decides the remote control receiver must be in the hood. He lays across the hood trying to open it. Speed flips the rotating 3/X-3 hood plate and rips out the wires and cables. This causes the Malange to crash into the remaining Three Roses Club car, and both go off the cliff and crash in a ball of flame below.

Aghast at seeing his father's car destroyed, Flash fails to notice the mountain. His chopper crashes into it, and he's killed. At the crash site, where by now the inspector's helicopter has also arrived, everyone is upset at Speed's "death." As Trixie lays down on the ground and cries, we see Speed swimming up from the nearby by river where he apparently fell into. As climbs out, the Go team are so happy to see him they run, tackle him, and all fall back into the river. But then they see Lily crying about her brother. Trixie says they'll always be her friend, and Lily responds that she hopes someday they can forgive Flash for what he did. The episode closes showing Lily, Speed and Trixie on a street corner enjoying the company of each other at some sort of mini-carnival; clown, balloons, ice cream, small children laughing... A glimpse at their newly forged friendship.

       Speed Racer note:

The original Japanese episode title is The Revenge of Marengo. In the manga, the original title is Return of the Malanga and the name of the event is Devil's Peak Race. In one part of the story, the Malanga goes off the course and is stopped. Speed (Go Mifune) gets out of the Mach Five and starts a fight with the mad driver. It turns out to be Lily (Uzi) who is driving the X-3 sports car.

She confesses that her brother, Flash, Jr., (Tommy) is behind the plot of revenge for his father's death. Speed and her exchange cars, with Lily driving the Mach Five and Speed is driving the Malanga. He employs this tactic, since he thinks he can drive the Malanga safely out of the race. Tommy is in the helicopter and is using the remote control to operate the X-3 sports car. The Mach Five and Malanga get into a skirmish and Lily is dumped out of the car and almost falls off a cliff. Speed saves her.

Speed's next actions are running after the Malanga and hopping inside the cabin. He is trying to find a way of stopping the car and can't. The Malanga catches up with the remaining cars of the Three Roses Club. The driver of car #7 tries to run Speed and the Malanga off the course. He jumps the driver and explains he's trying to help him. In the process, Speed throws the driver out of Roses car #7. The last driver is in Roses car #6. Speed jumps the driver and pulls him out of the car, just as it collides with the Malanga.

Both cars plunge down the cliff and crash. Speed and the driver fall down and land on the edge of a cliff, but aren't hurt. In his helicopter, Flash, Jr. hovers lower and pulls his gun out at both of them. The driver of car #6 confesses to Speed and Flash, Jr., that the Roses Club were under orders to kill his father, Flash Marker, Sr. (Yuzo). He says he'll tell the police all about it.

However, the explosion of the Malanga and the Rose car start an avalanch. Flash's helicopter falls down the mountainside and crashes on impact. Lily stops the Mach Five at the edge of the cliff and than drives it down the slope to the crash site to see of Flash is dead. It results in the Mach Five getting partially buried in the snowbank. Flash has survived and Lily helps him out of the wrecked helicopter.

He admits what he did was wrong and will turn himself into the police. Speed tells Flash, that with his skills, he would be able to get a good job after he gets out of jail. Speed then tells Flash, he'll watch over the flower shop and Lily, while he's gone. Lily says she's proud of Flash for doing the right thing.

Some of the story elements in Race for Revenge were intentionally changed for the anime episode. The most noteworthy is Flash Jr. is killed in the helicopter crash at the end of the story. This change for the anime episode sets a good moral example for the audience.

14.) The Desperate Desert Race, (Part 1)
Original Air Date: November 4, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: The Desert Race of Death, (Beginning)

At the airport, Speed, Trixie, and Sparky are preparing to depart for Sandoland to compete in the grueling Desert Race. They are sitting in the Mach Five as it is being towed towards the plane it will be loaded into. They wonder if Spritle and Chim-Chim have stowed away inside and decide to check before the car is loaded; the trunk is empty for a change. As the car is moved onto a platform to be hoisted up, a racing car, #4 with a black design pulls up and purposely hits the Mach Five. Jumping out of his car, the Black Tiger, he says he wanted to see how tough the Mach Five is and is surprised at how easily it can be damaged. It turns out that the driver is Kim Jugger, who, as Trixie says, "is known as the wildest racer in the world." Kim says he's won every race he entered.

Barely avoiding a fight between Kim and Speed, the Black Tiger and the Mach Five are finally loaded into the plane. Via Gate 5, they board Flight 326 bound for Arabia and Sandoland. After the racers, we see a fat lady with many children board. We can see that a small girl and her doll are actually Spritle and Chim-Chim. On the plane, the stewardess offers the passengers candy. When Chim-Chim looks up to grab some, his and Spritle's covers are blown. After the stewardess was shocked by seeing a chimp, they make a break for it, and hide out in the cargo area where the cars are stored. While there, they see a man with a patch over one eye plant a bomb in the Black Tiger. When he spots Spritle and Chim-Chim hiding in the Black Tiger, Chim-Chim hits and scratches the face of the man, who we find later is Ali Ben Schemer. He tries to stab them with his knife-cane, but they manage to escape back into the passenger area.

Upon arrival, Speed catches Spritle and Chim-Chim at the airport. Just then, 2:00 p.m., the bomb goes off in the Black Tiger. Kim feels sure that Speed had Spritle plant the bomb -- he found Spritle's slingshot in his car -- to get back at him for hitting the Mach Five. Speed and Kim fight. Speed eventually vanquishes Kim. Four men on camels show up, bow down, and escort Kim away. But Speed is still wants to show Kim that they didn't sabotage his car.

Once they reach the Imperial Hotel in Pubah, the capital of Sandoland, Spritle and Chim-Chim tell Speed about the one-eyed man. Excited to tell Kim the story, Speed rushes out of their hotel room and bowls over a bellboy. When asking him about Kim, the bellboy claims to know him well and says Kim left for his homeland of Flathill Country because the Black Tiger couldn't be repaired in time for the Desert Race.

That night, Speed can't sleep thinking of the incident. He decides to go to Flathill to see Kim. In the Mach Five, Trixie, Spritle and Chim-Chim have seemingly read his mind and are waiting for him. By morning, they're still driving through desert enroute. A sand storm begins and gets worse and worse until they are forced to stop and wait it out with the cockpit cover up. The Mach Five is nearly buried by the time the storm is over. Once over, they realize that many men on camels have guns aimed at the Mach Five. Speed starts the Mach Five going but can only just barely keep ahead of the camels! More men show up and join the pursuit.

Spritle and Chim-Chim, hiding in the trunk as always, use the slingshot and whatever they can find as ammo, including apples and pies, to take out a few riders. Soon, though, the Mach Five sails off the edge of an unusually large sand dune and stalls when they hit ground. When caught, their pursuer claim to be from the Flathill Army. But when Speed notices they are taking the Go Team towards the north, rather than south, the unsavory looking soldiers admit that they're actually rebels trying to save Flathill from a bad government.

The soldiers bring them to a fortress, the Palace of Doom, in the middle of the desert. Kim is there and standing behind him is the one-eyed man. Speed tells Kim the story about the Black Tiger was really sabotaged and the Spritle and Chim-Chim witnessed it, but Kim doesn't believe him. He orders them to be put in jail. The one-eyed man, Ali Ben Schemer, seems especially annoyed at Speed and further orders that the Mach Five be burned. The rebels turn their flame throwers to the task.

15.) The Desperate Desert Race, (Part 2)
Original Air Date: November 4, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: The Desert Race of Death, (Conclusion)

We discover that Kim is the son of the general controlling the rebels. Kim's father had ordered Ali Ben Schemer to blow up the Black Tiger so that Kim would be forced to return and would then join the rebels to fight against the Flathill government of criminals. Schemer also says that he'll have the Black Tiger fixed right away. Kim claims, however, that while most of the car can be repaired, the special brakes can't be fixed. Schemer then gets the idea that to be fair, the Mach Five's brakes will be removed. That way, the two can race on equal, if dangerous, footing. Trixie feels it's too dangerous, but Speed insists that it will be good practice for the upcoming Desert Race. The race is to begin the next morning at dawn and take place around the Palace of Doom.

The next day, a scruffy looking rebel gives Speed a bag lunch since the race is expected to last till night. Schemer gives the same to Kim. A rebel's rifleshot signals the start of the race. Once gone, Schemer has the remaining Go Team members imprisoned. Kim's father, General Ali Cannot is killed by Schemer, who orders one of his soldiers to push him down a well. Spritle and Chim-Chim make an escape on one of those speedy camels. The rebels let them go saying they won't last long in the desert without food or water.

Meanwhile, Speed and Kim's race has jostled their lunches and loosened the ties on the bags. Their "lunches" are really poisonous scorpions intended to kill them. Kim spots the one on Speed and on himself. They decide to slow down & jump. Speed uses his helmet and Kim his foot to kill the scorpions. By now Spritle and Chim-Chim are feeling the effects of the desert heat. The camel stops and lays down. When Chim-Chim hallucinates and sees the camel as fruit, he bites the camel, which takes off running -- without our two little heros. They see a mirage of an oasis and have fun swimming till the mirage disappears. They lay down, and vultures land nearby. But someone fires a gun and scares them away. It turns out to be General Abdul Noble of the Flathill army. And he lives up to his name.

Somehow during the race, Kim has gotten too close to quick sand. Speed gives him his hand and pulls him to relative safety. They both get in the Mach Five as the Black Tiger disappears under the sand. As they try to pull away, the Mach Five begins getting sucked under. As Speed and Kim lose consciousness, General Noble and his men somehow shoot and attach ropes to the Mach Five and pull it up to safety.

At the General's very nice and well kept castle, Kim awakens. When Noble tells him about the fate of his father and that Schemer lied about the country having a corrupt government, Kim laughs, not believing him. When Speed tells Kim about Noble and the army saving Spritle and Chim-Chim who escaped from Schemer, Kim realizes the truth. He decides to help rescue Trixie with Speed, Spritle and Chim-Chim. During the night, Trixie cries and is overheard by the prisoner in the next room. He is Prince Omar of Flathill. He finds Trixie's voice nice and she seems to feel the same about his. He tells her he will be executed the next morning.

At the fortress gates, Kim, Spritle and Chim-Chim show up posing as a girl and a child selling fruit. Chim-Chim is hiding in the fruit cart. At the same time, Speed is in the Mach Five with General Noble and the army on camelback following closely behind. Quick camels. Just as they get to the fortress, though, Schemer has the gates closed and deep pits around the fortress opened. Noble's riders fall into the pit. Inside, though, Kim is pouring gunpowder throughout the weapons room but is confronted by Schemer before he can light the powder. Kim throws a can of gunpowder to known away the gun Schemer is holding. The gun hits the ground and goes off, which ignites the powder. Everyone hops in the Mach Five and race out of the fortress just before it explodes doing in Schemer and the rest of his bad guys.

In Sandoland it's race day. The announcer tells the crowd that Kim can't make it because the Black Tiger isn't available. Kim tells Speed to win the race for him. Nearby, Prince Omar makes an appearance saying something to the effect that Trixie is as lovely as her voice. She looks up into his face, and, well, let's just say Speed has nothing to worry about here, royalty or no... Speed will easily win the Desert Race that day.

16.) The Fire Race, (Part 1)
Original Air Date: November 11, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: Inca Underground Race, (Beginning)

The scene opens at a meeting of The League of Countries, presumably the equivalent of the United Nations, where the countries are demanding that the kingdom of Kapetepek open its borders to the world. The country appears to be a mix between a rich Middle Eastern country and a South American Aztec society. Chief Zuma refuses to open the borders saying they don't want strangers in their land. Other countries then accuse him of conducting secret weapons research, and so on. Chief Zuma of Kapetepek and the League of Countries decide that a car race will be held. If the Kapetepekan driver wins, their borders can remain closed. If a non-Kapetepekan driver wins, the borders will be open to the world. The League members are shocked to find that the Kapetepekan driver is none other than the fearsome Kabala.

Kabala disappeared years ago and has not been seen since. Soon after, our hero Speed receives a letter inviting him to take part in the Fire Festival Race in Kapetepek. Speed has a bad feeling about it and recalls a race where Car #13 -- Kabala's -- caused a car crash. Another race by the Amazon shows Kabala's car springing over the river so close above the head of a racer on a raft with his car, that the racer falls overboard and is eaten by piranhas.

The demonic and tragic racing stories about Kabala were factual events that Speed learned about in the early days of his racing career. Soon after, the Go Team land at the airport in Kapetepek. Once inside, they meet Racer X, who tells them he will competing in the race. Later that evening, Speed and the other racers are invited to witness a strange Kapetepekan ceremony that is presided by Chief Zuma. This event begins the Fire Festival Race. He announces the winner of the race will marry his granddaughter, Silvana. Upon hearing this, she isn't happy about it and Trixie is even less happy, too. Chief Zuma says he thinks Speed looks like the bravest man in the race and wants Silvana to marry him. Trixie is very jealous and objects to the marriage proposition. Kadar, who will be competing in the race, tells Chief Zuma that he would like to be her bridegroom if Speed refuses.

When people doubt that Kabala is going to show up for the race, Chief Zuma takes them to his old, spiderweb covered residence. He shows them photos on the wall of racers. Each photo has a mark of a skull on the corner of it meaning that none of the racers could race again. The Chief says after this race, these 2 photos will have the same marks: pictures of Speed and Racer X. After the festival Kadar, with his trademark red lizard on his black crash helmet, and his other four team members attack Silvana to find where the kingdom's treasures are hidden. Speed steps in, uses his expert martial arts, and quickly dispatches the gang. Silvana reminds them that this is why her father wants to keep the borders closed.

The next day, the Chief has all the racers bring their cars by raft downstream to the start of the race. On the shore are bones of would-be treasure hunters who illegally entered Kapetepek. Finally, they arrive at the shore by a huge rock cliff. With his remote control ring, the Chief opens secret doors into the mountain. The race will take place under a volcano. When the volcano erupts, the race begins. When it erupts again, the doors to the mountain will seal for another 100 years. Everyone goes into the mountain to see the ancient city, which looks like an Aztec city with pyramids and so on, of the Kapetepek ancestors. While they're there, Trixie becomes jealous of Speed talking with Silvana.

After observing this and returning to the surface, Trixie calculates the average speed of the Mach Five will be 160 mph to enable Speed to drive the race course and make it out the other side, before the mountain walls close for another 100 years. The racers are in position at the starting line as the volcano begins to erupt. Racer X seems to have vanished, since he's not present for the start of the race. Chief Zuma is waiting for Kabala to appear before he orders the race to begin.

The League's representative has cast doubts about him showing up and just at the last minute, Kabala appears in car #13. Everyone is completely surprised that he showed up, since it's been rumored that Kabala had died many years ago. Speed is totally in awe when he looks over to see Kabala in the sleek, black sports car. The volcano is becoming very active and is spewing out fire and rocks that are landing on the race course. Chief Zuma gives the signal and the Fire Festival Race begins.

All the racers drive into the entrance and the rock walls of the mountain close together. The molten lava flows downward and seals them for good. Once inside the mountain, some of the racers encounter rock slides and molten lava flows that are a result of the volcano erupting. Some of the racers crash in the process. Kadar sees this as a means to get back at Speed. He strikes the Mach Five with his car and this causes Speed to veer off the course. He manages to keep the Mach Five under control and applies the brakes to avoid disaster. A stream of molten lava is rushing onto the stone floor and Speed manages to avoid it. He accelerates to get out, but the back tires get caught in the rugged terrain which protrudes on the course. He looks up at a rock ledge and sees a stream of molten lava that is about to pour down on the Mach Five.

17.) The Fire Race, (Part 2)
Original Air Date: November 11, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: Inca Underground Race, (Conclusion)

As part two begins, the Mach Five is deliberately struck by Kadar and its rear tires get caught in the rocky terrain just off the course. Speed hits the accelerator and can't get out. He sees a stream of molten lava that is about to pour down on the Mach Five. He activates button "D" on the steering wheel, so the deflector canopy will prevent the lava from coming inside the car. He accelerates much harder and gets out real fast. Speed uses a temporary route and the Mach Five auto-jacks over the river of lava and returns to the main tunnel. As he drives onward, he sees other racers have crashed and burned in the lava. He wonders what caused all the crashes. Eventually, all the racers stop at a cliff because there is an underground lake blocking their way. They decide to return to the surface.

But just then, the lake begins draining only to leave a huge four-legged monster standing there. It is a rock monster and without the support of the water begins crumbling and falling on the cars. Several get hit, but Speed makes it across the dry lake bed into a tunnel at the other side. As he continues, he drives through an underground petrified forest. Further ahead, Kadar and his team see that the walls of the cave contain diamonds. They stop and try to pry loose as many as they can. But then a giant octopus-like monster attacks them. They barely get away, and as Speed comes upon them, he has to use the Mach Five's rotary saws to cut through the tentacles trying to grab the car.

Soon after, Speed drives to the ruins of an ancient underground palace filled with the treasure of Kapetepek. But Kadar and his men are looting the treasure and Kabala is trying to stop them. Speed joins him and they fight off Kadar and company. When Kabala's visor falls off, it turns out that it's Racer X in disguise. As luck would have it, Kadar recovers from the fight and fires his pistol at them. He holds them at gunpoint to make sure they will never get in his way again. Speed and Racer X are backing away from Kadar in anticipation that he's going to shoot them down.

The cave is beginning to rumble from the gunshot. Just as Kadar is about to shoot them down, the stone floor collapses under Speed and Racer X. They fall into a deep abyss and disappear from view. Kadar and his men figure they are dead from the fall. They load up the jewels in their cars and leave to resume the race. But it turns out that Speed and Racer X are alive and well. They manage to find their way out to safety, but Speed is in question.

Speed: "Racer X, why did you disguise yourself as a Kapetepekan?"

Racer X: "Hmm? I'll tell you. I was taught to drive mountainous roads by a Kapetepekan named Kabala. I knew none of the tricks of how to race along those tortured roads and broken trails when I first met Kabala. Every racing car driver in the world was afraid of him, but he was kind and helpful to me. He taught me various techniques which only he knew. And then, when I became a professional racing driver, I had a race with Kabala on a mountain path. Suddenly, before he had a chance to avoid it, there was a landslide. And his car fell into the valley below. I searched for him. But I never saw him again. So to return his kindness, I disguised myself as Kabala and try to protect the treasure of the Kapetepeks."

Speed: "And the borders of this land?"

Racer X: "That's right, Speed. This race was begun because someone didn't like Kapetepek keeping its borders closed. And if you win this race Speed, the borders of Kapetepek will be open to anybody in the world. The country will be ruined."

Speed: "That's nonsense! I'm getting back into the race! I don't care about any silly reason for racing like you just gave me! I'm racing to win. That's all. And I'm gonna do it! I'll see you at the finish line, Racer X! There's nothing you can say that will try to stop me from being the winner! Nothing!"

Racer X: "Speed, come back here! Listen to me! Speed!"

Speed: "It's no use talking any further, Racer X. All I'm interested in is winning."

Meanwhile, Kadar and his teammates have escaped with the jewels, but a river of molten lava flows through the course. The road is blocked and his four partners are trapped at the edge of the cliff. Each one tries to make it across, but they crash and go over the edge as a result of the lava flow. Kadar races ahead only to end up in a lava pool himself. He could have escaped but doesn't want to leave the jewels behind. As he decides how to save them, a bubble of lava bursts shooting hot lava onto Kadar, and he perishes. Elsewhere on the surface, Spritle and Chim-Chim have infiltrated a Kapetepekan religious ceremony. Chim-Chim is soon found out, and tied to a table under a huge swinging pendulum. After the locals leave him to his fate - the pendulum swings lower each time - a young boy unties Spritle in the nick of time.

The volcano is starting to erupt again and everyone waiting outside is tense, since no racers have emerged from the cave mouth. Speed and Kabala are in the final stretch and drive through the giant skeleton of a dinosaur. Speed does a few slalom runs in and around the giant ribs and gets back on the course. Just as he and Kabala get to the far side, the dinosaur's head is loosened by the high decibel noise from the engines of both cars. It falls to the ground and Speed and Kabala drive right through it, shattering the ancient remains into little fragments.

With only a few minutes and not much room to spare, Speed and Kabala drive the last leg in the race, but neither one of them knows if he will make it out alive. The cave mouth is starting to close for good, so Speed sounds the horn, and hopes Trixie and Sparky will hear it. They do and all of them await anxiously to see if Speed will emerge. He and Kabala make it out and the race is a tie. Chief Zuma insists Kabala is the winner and wants to keep the country's borders closed. In a few moments, Speed honestly tells the Chief that is not Kabala he's speaking to. But the Chief insists it is Kabala and that he'd know him anywhere.

Racer X reveals himself to Chief Zuma and everyone is surprised it really isn't Kabala. Racer X tells the Chief, "I've risked my life to save your treasure. Now, you gentlemen must come to some agreement. Compromise. Open your borders to the world some of the time." Chief Zuma agrees and thinks it is a good idea to keep the borders open on a semi-annual basis. Speed and Racer X are the only two racers who finished and made it out alive. Initially, there were 96 cars that entered the Fire Festival Race. Early on, some backed out and the rest were killed inside the volcano. At the airport, Silvana says goodbye to Speed and wishes him luck. He says to her, "You know someday, I'll come here again."

       Speed Racer note:

The original Japanese episode title is Inca Underground Race. There are substantial differences in the original manga and the anime of the story. The first example is that Racer X isn't in the manga, but he appears in the episode. In the manga, the fearsome Kabala joins the race to win, so the country's borders will remain closed and to protect the treasure of the Kapetepeks. In the anime, Racer X is disguised as Kabala and later reveals he met Kabala while he was driving along "tortured roads and broken trails." He taught Rex Racer driving techniques which only he knew. Kabala's car also uses the auto-jacks, which the Mach Five employs.

When he became a professional racing driver, Racer X and Kabala had a race on a mountain path. Suddenly, before he had a chance to avoid it, there was a landslide and Kabala's car fell into the valley below. Racer X searched for him, but he never saw him again. So, in return for Kabala's kind ways, Racer X donned his friend's identity to protect the treasure and to keep the country's borders closed to the world. This change in the anime was made to give insight into Rex Racer's past, as he was learning to become a professional racer, which he explained to Speed.

In the part two of the episode, there's a underground lake with a four-legged rock monster that crumbles after the lake goes dry. It wasn't contained in the manga, nor was the petrified forest that Speed drives through in the second part of the episode. In the manga, the Guardian Beast of Kapetepek is a giant monster who lives in the volcano. He protects the treasure from those who want to illegally steal it.

Kadar and his men are looting the treasure, so the monster attacks them and kills his teammates. He manages to escape, but is seriously injured in the aftermath. Nearby are Speed and Kabala, who drive into the skeleton cage of a dinosaur and get trapped. This is a clever means for the monster to kill them. In part two of the anime, the monster was an octopus-like creature who attacks Kadar and his men, who are stealing the diamonds, but they get away and resume the race.

Back to the manga; Kadar manages to get in close range and he shoots Kabala, but the wound isn't fatal. After a few moments, the gunshot creates a shower of rocks that falls on Kadar and he dies. In the anime, it was changed to Kadar and his teammates perishing as they tried to cross the river of molten lava.

In the manga, Speed must find a way to get he and Kabala out of the skeleton cage before the giant monster kills them. Speed and Kabala have a brief conversation about why he was trying to protect Kapetepek and its treasure from the outside world. Speed realizes it's more important than winning the race and wants to help. He opens the Mach Five's trunk and puts Kabala inside and then lights the fuel on Kabala's car afire, so it will explode.

He then disguises himself as Kabala and hops in the Mach Five and Kabala's car explodes, which shatters the skeleton cage and kills the giant monster. Speed drives out quickly to avoid getting caught in the explosion. In the anime, Speed and Kabala drive through the skeleton and when they get to the other side, the head loosens from the engine vibrations. It falls down and they drive through it, shattering the ancient remains into little fragments.

In the manga, the final scenes have Speed in disguise as Kabala, who emerges from Mount Rumble. He drives past Chief Zuma and takes the Mach Five around a bend and removes Kabala's headpiece and visor. Speed opens the trunk and gets Kabala out. Trixie, Spritle and Chim Chim run over and Speed tells them he lost the race. But they are more concerned he made it out of the volcano alive. Chief Zuma and Kabala are standing on a nearby hilltop and the Chief thanks Speed for saving Kapetepek.

The helicopter is flying away and Speed bids a happy farewell to Chief Zuma and Kabala. In the anime, it is revealed that Racer X is disguised as Kabala and risked his life to protect the country. He tells Chief Zuma and the League of Countries to compromise and keep the country's borders open some of the time.

18.) Girl Daredevil, (Part 1)
Original Air Date: November 18, 1967
Written and Directed by: Peter Fernandez
Original Title: The Hidden Treasure of Niagara, (Beginning)

This episode opens with a map of the world and Speed is reminiscing about his early racing experiences. Scenes from The Most Dangerous Race and Challenge of the Masked Racer are superimposed on the map as Speed narrates:

"For months, I've been driving in races all over the world. Their have been a lot of bad crashes and I've had some close calls, but the danger is a part of racing, just as is the thrill of winning. I'll go on competing in races throughout the world, because wherever there's a challenge, I've gotta meet it."

Speed, Trixie, Spritle and Chim-Chim are on their way to compete in the Nitona Handicap in the city of Nitona. As they enter the city, a crowd has gathered below a building. On the top of the skyscraper, an attractive girl in a circus outfit is standing on the edge. She jumps, scaring the onlookers. On her way down she does some flips and lands on a large air bag, bounces off it, and lands on her feet in the street. The stunt is an advertisement for the Universal Circus that has come to town. The girl, Twinkle Banks, spots Speed, who is clearly impressed with her, and winks at him. Trixie's not so happy about that. As a result, when Spritle wants to go to the circus, Trixie thinks that the upcoming race will conveniently leave no time
